State of the Union

Without a doubt, my favorite part of the State of the Union address was when Bush was in the middle of calling for renewal of various provisions of the Patriot Act. After boasting about how these radical provisions, passed quickly after the 9/11 attacks in the name of fighting terrorism, are now being used to bust embezzlers, Bush warned that “Key provisions of the Patriot Act are set to expire next year.” The Democrats immediately broke into applause, much to Bush’s annoyance.

Of course, the Republicans would have none of that. Bush switched to his “you’re supposed to be scared and do what I say without question, dammit” voice and finished his thought, after which the Republicans quite deliberately applauded as loud as they could. Take that, Democrats.

The rest of the speech was pretty much what you’d expect.
